Choosing a career.

Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions you make in your life. The profession a person chooses in many ways determines his future. If you manage to find the right career you will be happy and successful. It takes much time and effort to find out what you are cut out for.

Some people try to procrastinate taking a decision. They think they will take it later and postpone taking the fist step. They pretend that such problem doesn't exist at all. I think that this way deprives person a lot of opportunities. Unfortunately not everyone understands the necessity of making a conscious choice of the future profession. The majority of us don't get around to making a decision about an occupation or career until somebody forces us to face the problem. And it's usually our parents and relatives who come to help us in making this difficult choice. Of course, it's good to talk to people of different professions to find out where your interests lie. But the problem is that many students simply follow blindly in the footsteps of their closest people. Those, who do it, often make costly mistakes. You shouldn't allow anybody to make this important choice for you or to thrust their opinion on you. It will be much better if you take the initiative, find all the information you need, reading special journals and talking to people of different occupations, find out where your interests lie. Besides, it's very important to take a realistic view of your strengths and weaknesses. Nowadays it's easy to evaluate yourself by doing aptitude tests. Having thought carefully what sort of person you are, try to work out a realistic set of occupational requirements. It's a good idea to take into account different factors: job setting, job rewards, presence of challenge and responsibility, good conditions, perks, training, traveling, promotion prospects.

Many people believe that money is a determining factor in making the choice. Everyone wants to have a lucrative and perspective job. Nowadays everyone seems to be immersed in the rat race and wants to earn as much money as possible. And these people are ready for everything: working extra hours, spending a great amount of time on business trips.

But some people believe that there's always more fish in the sea and the most significant factor is job satisfaction. Much depends on the inclinations and interests of the person. Although it's wonderful when one's hobby becomes one's profession, it seldom happens in reality. Still, you can enjoy different things: relations with colleagues, variety of tasks, work responsibilities. Job satisfaction is a rather contradictory factor. Some people prefer to have a challenging and demanding job as it gives a satisfying feeling of achievement, for others it is just a source of stress.

As for me, I made up my mind o become an economist. My choice of occupation didn't come as a sudden flash. It was a suspended and well thought-out decision.

Before taking this decision I weighed all the pros and cons of the job. The job of an economist assumes providing specialist advice based on the application of economic theory and knowledge. Economists do this by studying data and statistics and using their understanding of economic relationships to spot trends, carrying out considerable amounts of research and collecting large amounts of information. Then they analyse this data to assess feasibility, produce forecasts of future trends and make recommendations of ways to improve efficiency and take advantage of future activities.

For some people the job of an economist may seem to be tedious and monotonous. This job is really challenging and meticulous but it can hardly be called routine. Economy is a game and if you understand the rules of the game you will never be bored. The job of an economist is really demanding and not everybody can become an economist and succeed in doing this job. To become a successful economist you need to have considerable qualification, knowledge of economic theory, good understanding of economic relationships. But it is not enough. What is more important, you need to have a special turn of mind and special features of character, such as attentiveness, diligence, accuracy. You should be numerate as the job of an economist involves carrying out different calculations. You should be computer-literate as you'll have to study statistics and to make different operations using specialist software. Besides, you should be farsighted. You should foresee the consequences of your actions, produce forecasts and make recommendations. I think I have all the necessary characteristics, and I'll try to do my best to become a qualified economist.
