6. Choosing a tour route.

Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places, or just for a change of scene. It is always interesting to discover new things, different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different musical rhythms.

If I have a chance I will go to Sankt-Petersburg.

St. Petersburg is a large beautiful city in the north-western part of Russia. It is a city of white nights, green parks, numerous channels and bridges, granite embankments and railings. Many famous Russian and foreign architects created the face of the city in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The St. Peter and Paul Fortress is located on the Hare Island. The foundation stone was laid by Peter the Great in Mai 1703. The fortress was always used only as political prison

There are very many beautiful and interesting places in St. Petersburg. Among them are the Summer Garden with its famous railing, the Hermitage, the Kazan Cathedral, the Russian Museum, the Rostral Columns, the Alexander Nevski Monastery, the Alexander Column, the Palace Square, the Triumphal Arch, the Admiralty, the Field of Mars, etc.

The Hermitage is one of the most interesting museums in St. Petersburg. It occupies six buildings. The largest and the most important building designed by Rastrelli is the Winter Palace. The St. Petersburger Hermitage has 365 rooms and more than 2.7 million various exhibits. It is the largest art museum in our country and one of the most famous art museums in the whole world.

7. One of the most beautiful buildings in the world.

There are many different beautiful buildings in the world, such as Kremlin, Tower of London, Louvre and so on, but tastes are differ, and different pupils will tell you about different buildings, but I want to tell you a few words about Tower of London, because Tower to my mind.

The Tower on the north bank of the Thames is one of the most ancient buildings in London. It was founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror. For many centuries the Tower has been a fortress, a palace, a prison and royal treasury. Many saddest events took place within the walls of the Tower. The greatest people were sent to, tortured and executed. At present people visit the Tower as a museum to see old arms, armour as well as the Crown Jewels. The Tower is Britain's most famous and most visited historic building .And it has many old interesting traditions.

8. Museum of land transport.

I would like to tell you about the Museum of Transport in Manchester.

The Museum of Transport in Manchester is a museum which keeps and advances a heritage of public transport of the County of the Greater Manchester. The museum has been created to advance interest to history and a heritage of local passenger transport system. There is a great collection. It is one of the greatest museums in Great Britain. Because of the small size of a building the museum cannot contain all exhibits, therefore a part of a collection is outside of territory of a museum. Also in a collection there are two trolley buses of corporation Ashton, a pre-production model of tram Metrolink, and the Manchester tram of Corporation of 1901. There are an extensive collection of archives, old schedules, cards, books, emblems, a management and plans there. The collection of a museum constantly replenishes.

9. The historic voyage you wish you would have taken part in.

Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. He was born in Italy. His father and both grandfathers were cloth makers. Columbus was a seaman and made many sea voyages.

Most people in Columbus's days thought that the earth was flat and they did not believe that beyond the Atlantic Ocean lay India. In 1492 the King and the Queen of Spain gave him money to go to India. He decided to sail west as he was sure that our planet was round. There were 3 caravels: the Santa Maria, the Nina and the Pinta. After sailing 4000 miles he reached some land.

The crew saw something like a white cliff and cried out: "Tierra! Tierra!". Columbus thought 'that it must be India but it was not. It was a new land - a new continent. It was America. Columbus named the land they had reached San Salvador ("Holy Saviour"). People began to speak about the land as "The new World".

European people came to the New World for many reasons. Some hoped to find gold and silver. Priests and missionaries came to bring the Christian religion to the Indians. Among those who came for freedom was a small group of English people called Pilgrims. They wanted to start a new life and to have no religious problems they had in England.

In 1620 on the ship "Mayflower" they landed in the north-east of America. They set up a colony and called that part of the country "New England".
