The aim of this dissertation is to describe those strategies and tools currently utilised by American film companies to promote films which can be potentially beneficial for film distribution in Russia. This will be done by giving an overview of available tools and strategies in the film industry today. An analysis of US and Russian film promotion techniques will follow with a comparison of strategies and their effectiveness in each country.

Particular attention will be given to release and post-release strategies in film promotion. The analysis will be based on a combination of secondary and primary data gained from existing literature as well as surveys and interviews conducted by the author.

Conclusions with regards to the central hypothesis and research question will demonstrate that the Russian film industry could greatly benefit from the examples given from the American film industry which recognizes the equal importance of filmmaking and film promotion.
